Snow Rakes Can Help Keep Your Roof In Good Shape In The Winter

I’m going to be honest. I’d never heard of such a thing as a snow rake until a couple of years ago. I live in an area that gets some snow but usually not a whole lot at one time. It wasn’t until we had a bit of a blizzard here that I noticed people talking about using snow rakes.

So for those out there like me who don’t know what a snow rake is, it’s a pretty simple device. It’s basically a blade on a long handle. You stand on the ground around your house, reach up with the snow rake and use it to pull four feet or so of snow off of the outer edge of your roof.

And why would you want to do this? Snow may seem light and fluffy when it’s on the ground, but it can be heavy enough to be damaging when it’s sitting thick on your roof. Removing just the outer four feet or so of the snow blanket from your roof can save you from some expensive repairs later on. It reduces the weight on the roof by quite a lot and it aids in drainage when the snow starts to melt.

So if you live in an area that gets a lot of snow, a snow rake is an essential tool. If you live in an area that gets just a bit of snow most years but you get a lot once in a while, it’s still a good idea to have one of these things on hand. And you don’t want to wait to get one until the snow is on the way or already on your roof. There won’t be any available in your local hardware stores at that point.
